What is a hanmadang?

Hanmadangs originated in the courtyards of the traditional homes of ancient Korea.  Families and friends within the community gathered at a single home’s courtyard to celebrate and be together as one with festive events, music, and food.  Hanmadangs featured something for everyone including activities specifically for children as well as those intended for adults and elders.

The term “handmadang” is a combination of two Korean words – “Madang”, meaning courtyard and “Han”, which means one; hence the term “hanmadang.”

August 15th in Chinese calendar is the day of celebration in Korea, also known as the Korean Thanksgiving. The term hanmadang is used not only to describe this day of celebration, but has also been extended to other festivals worldwide including the World Tae Kwon Do hanmadang.  Originally hosted in South Korea.

The World Tae Kwon Do hanmadang invites competitors of the art from around the world to participate in several days of competition, fellowship, and of course – fun!

All of our Dae Han students, family members, and friends are invited to join us on Saturday, May 11, 2019 as we meet and celebrate as one in the tradition of the original hanmadangs!
